It has a lot of great features and few flaws in a relatively compact package, and BenQ is a major player in the monitor and projector markets. TH671ST is one of BenQ’s most competitively priced gaming and cinema projectors. To see whether or not the TH671ST is worth the hard-earned cash and how well it fits in, I used it both for gaming and watching movies for a couple of weeks.
As a result, you can easily replace your living room TV with the BenQ TH671ST, and it can deliver equally satisfying gaming or cinematic experiences.

What you’ll love about the BenQ TH671ST projector
With a compact white chassis, offset lens, manual focus and zoom wheels, and some venting on the side, the BenQ TH671ST shares many of the features of smaller home projectors, such as the ViewSonic PX607HD I also reviewed. The projector comes with a remote control as well as a full set of controls on the top. This unit has plenty of ports, including dual HDMI. It’s well spaced so if you’re plugging in multiple devices at once, there won’t be any congestion.

Setup
Choosing a projector position – low, high, or behind a screen – as well as basic or advanced settings take no more than two or three minutes. The basic mode only offers a few preset picture, audio, and LumiExpert options, so I recommend selecting advanced. Since I did not have a white screen to use with the projector, I didn’t have to adjust much other than the wall color offset to get a great picture out of the box. It is possible to customize the picture just how you want it in just about any of the modes, and there are two custom modes to switch between if the picture isn’t quite up to snuff. A modern TV’s color space is generally measured using the Rec. 709 standard, which covers 92 percent of the eye.
In the middle of a sunny day, I first set up the projector, and as long as it’s not in direct sunlight, you shouldn’t have any trouble using it whenever you want. Even in SmartEco mode, which prolongs lamp life, the image is crisp and clear even in a dark room without direct sunlight. The lamp produces upwards of 3,000 ANSI lumens on its brightest setting. When the lamp is used normally, it should last about 4,000 hours, and when it is used in Lampsave mode, it can last for 15,000 hours. LumiExpert on the TH671ST measures the brightness of the room and adjusts the picture gamma automatically based on that information. It’s subtle but welcome.
A good-looking picture is delivered by BenQ’s TH671ST with full color and great contrast, low input lag, and enough brightness to be seen in almost any setting. With 16.67ms input lag in Fast Mode, the TH671ST is suitable for gaming. Although a first-person shooter has high visual demands, I found the experience enjoyable, if not ideal for a competitive setting. I played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe multiplayer on a Nintendo Switch and Battlefield V on my PC.
With the single 5-watt speaker, the picture is quite loud without distortion, and the picture has excellent color and contrast. You can hook up external speakers to the 3.5mm jacks on the back if you want to create a true home cinema setup, but I found the built-in speaker to be sufficient. TH671ST has a dedicated mode to project 3D movies, but I couldn’t test it.
To get a 100-inch picture, the projector only needs to be about five feet from the wall because it has a “short throw.” In addition to the ability to correct keystone with just a few presses of a button, two adjustable feet on the projector’s bottom make it easier to get a perfectly rectangular image. The projector’s zoom and focus are controlled manually by two wheels at the top. If you don’t move it often, you shouldn’t have to touch it again after setting it once. With a large exhaust on the front corner, the fan stays quiet enough that it does not interfere with your viewing experience.

What you’ll dislike about the BenQ TH671ST projector
Those who prefer projectors to TVs will find plenty to appreciate in the BenQ TH671ST, and it is hard to dislike. You’re going to expect a device that costs so much to last for a long time, so it would be nice to see a USB-C port included to easily connect multiple devices. We’ve seen a modern port on other projectors in the same category before, so it’s not a deal-breaker.
The TH671ST is also well suited for consoles and casual PC gaming, so anyone looking for more than a casual gaming experience with low refresh rates will undoubtedly want to consider a gaming monitor. A 100-inch screen is a thrill to see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but those looking for sweaty Apex Legends matches will still opt for something that runs more efficiently.

Should you buy BenQ’s TH671ST projector?
In addition to offering a large picture, the BenQ TH671ST projector offers low input lag, full color, excellent contrast, and enough brightness to be seen in almost any setting, so it’s a good alternative to a standard TV for casual gaming and movie viewing. LumiExpert, which automatically adjusts gamma in all picture modes, makes it easier to get the best picture possible. The lack of a USB-C port on the back is not a deal-breaker, but it would be nice to see one.
While the $799 price tag (opens in new tab) might cause some trepidation, keep in mind it’s meant to replace a huge TV that would be more expensive. Under optimal settings, the lamp can last up to 15,000 hours, with lamp replacements costing about $58 (opens in new tab). In summary, the BenQ TH671ST is the perfect choice if you want to recreate a cinematic experience at home.
