It’s still more expensive than DDR4 and doesn’t provide proportional benefits. Kits like the latest one in G.Skill’s Trident line show what the memory can do. However, as prices continue to fall, getting some will become an increasingly appealing prospect.
G.Skill always introduces significant design changes with each new RAM generation. In the silver and black version, you’ll see a lot of the NEO. However, the shift away from Trident’s prongs to a single sweeping fin covering part of the diffuser from either side is striking and novel.
G.Skill’s Z5 has a thick diffuser that blurs individual LEDs, creating a smooth transition and lighting that draws attention. With G.Skill’s software, you can easily configure each LED. If you want to make sure it’s aligned with other lighting sources inside the case, you might want to use your motherboard’s built-in syncing feature.
Samsung B-die doesn’t need an introduction, and it’s found in many premium memory kits, but G.Skill decided to go with SK Hynix’s M-die for this kit. This enabled the Z5 to run at 6400MHz, albeit at a power draw of 1.4V at 32-39-39-102 CAS latencies.

With its flexibility, the M-die can be manually overclocked to 6600MHz while maintaining its timings. To do this, you’ll need to supply it with 0.05V more power, a full 0.2V more than a DDR5.
There’s no better Core i9 13900K RAM than the Z5 at the moment. Our discussion will be based on its results, compared to DDR4, and its comparison with DDR4. Hardware Unboxed compared it to the NEO in their 13900K review, but the results were mixed. Cyberpunk 2077 and Watchdogs Legion are both notable outliers at 1080p, where CPU usage is highest, with increases of 30 and 20 frames per second, respectively.
In other games, the performance jumps weren’t nearly as impressive. Far Cry 6 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider had identical framerates and Shadow of the Tomb Raider only had a few frames advantage.

Another well-known memory manufacturer, Teamgroup decided to stick to some of its most recognizable brands in the DDR5 era. Besides its distinctive design, the Delta RGB also has excellent performance and costs substantially less than the Z5. So if you’re looking for value in the high-end RAM market, TEAMGROUP is offering the best RAM for the i9 13900K.
Despite more branding than last time, DDR4 Delta RGB RAM owners will find that little has changed in appearance. The sticks are still vaguely wing-shaped, and come in two colors, so white case owners have another reason to buy. The stamped aluminum heat spreaders are 46mm tall and decorated with several sci-fi indents.
As a result of the diffuser’s shape, RGB implementation is excellent. It extends beyond the PCB’s confines, giving it a unique appearance from above and sideways. The spreader also radiates color through an R-shaped cutout. In terms of AIO compliance, only the beefiest air coolers may clash with the relatively tall memory.
SK Hynix’s M die is used in this kit, which is toned down compared to the Z5. The clock speed is 6000MHz, with looser timings. A small voltage increase lets you overclock the Delta RGB to 6400MHz, making it equal to our overall winner. The memory consumes less power, as only 1.35V is required to support its XMP 3.0 profile.

Speedy DDR5 RAM for Less
If you overclock or not, you can expect similar results in gaming. Let’s focus on productivity instead. In that category, DDR5 won’t be a significant improvement over DDR4, either. Memory bandwidth and latency will be the biggest differences you’ll see.
In real-world productivity tasks, however, these benefits do not translate into tangible benefits. File compression is the biggest benefit. Rendering, encoding, or photo retouching either see a negligible speedup or remain unchanged.

Compared to the fledgling AM5, Raptor Lake provides continuous DDR4 support. Since the real-world performance differences aren’t too significant, you can buy a speedy DDR4 kit like the Ballistix MAX RGB. You might want to invest the substantial savings in a better GPU.
Despite the fact that Ballistix RAM has been around for a while, its rib-studded aluminum heat spreaders make a lukewarm impression. While the MAX RGB version does not come with these in multiple colors, it does come with a translucent diffuser that barely adds anything to the kit’s height. At just 39 mm, it’s one of the shortest RGB kits available.
In total, eight RGB lights are used on each stick. These are evenly spaced, and the diffuser is able to soften the individual glows to form a uniform and fun effect. Crucial, like G.Skill, also has its own lighting controls, but you can ignore them if you want your motherboard to take care of them.

Cranking DDR4 to the MAX… Almost
Since Micron owns Crucial, it can keep IC prices low since it owns Micron. In a sea of SK Hynix and Samsung offerings, Micron B stands out. This particular circuit is among Micron’s best, allowing the MAX RGB to run at 4000MHz at an adequate, if unremarkable, CAS latency of 18. This memory works at a standard 1.35V voltage, so it is suitable for DDR4 applications.
If you increase the voltage, you might be able to bump the memory to 4200MHz. However, it comes with looser timings, so you might want to try CL16 on 4000MHz instead.
If DDR5 doesn’t suddenly make substantial gains, a kit like this can score well in artificial testing and compression, provided it does not break the MHz barrier.
DDR5 isn’t better than DDR4 in terms of gaming or productivity unless you’re searching for absolute best, regardless of price.

Compared to Alder Lake, Raptor Lake’s RAM prices are far better at launch. While the best RAM for Intel i9-13900K is still quite expensive, you can get Corsair’s Vengeance for less than what you would pay for DDR4 RAM now, even if you aren’t a fan of RGB.
As you can see from the photo, Corsair memory has a distinct style. There’s no RGB, but the curved top and gray area in the middle make up for it.
The spreader’s black parts are adorned with Corsair’s signature triangles, while the sides are emblazoned with Vengeance’s futuristic-looking white & yellow.
It may not be possible to adjust the lighting with this memory, but iCUE is still useful. You can monitor the current temperature, voltages, and frequency without accessing the BIOS, and even choose what to do if a certain temperature is reached by the sticks. By installing this software, you will be able to see how the RAM behaves.

DDR5 at DDR4 Prices
With the RGB eliminated, Corsair could afford to spend less on the Vengeance’s internals, which were equipped with Samsung B-die ICs.
When the XMP profile is enabled, the RAM is switched to CL36 with only a slight increase in power consumption. Our chosen sample is at 5600MHz, which results in better timings.
In the case of the Vengeance, you can push the frequency to 6000MHz by feeding it more power and sacrificing timings. Many DDR5 memory follows a similar pattern. The profile you get out of the box works fine, but there’s room for improvement.
In most cases, you will be able to run Vengeance at its XMP settings without losing a lot of performance. When running bandwidth tests, you will notice that you are losing a little performance. But you won’t notice these effects in gaming or with intense multi-threading tasks.

As long as Intel keeps supporting DDR4, we’ll keep recommending it for Intel and AMD builds since it’s just so versatile and attractive. We have an undisguised sympathy for the NEO. You’d get similar results from similarly priced or more expensive DDR5 alternatives regardless of the price, even though it might not be as affordable as cheaper DDR4 kits.
The NEO’s silver design can be seen as inspiration for G.Skill’s Z5. It has an iconic two-tone heat spreader, and its sides have different textures, with the black side being brushed and the silver one matte. The renowned Trident prongs shield parts of the diffuser and are still intact.
As Trident Z has evolved, great lighting has remained the only constant. You shouldn’t have a problem blending into your RGB environment because there are barely any bright spots with the spread of illumination. Users who cool the 13900K with AIOs shouldn’t have a problem with the 44mm DIMMs’ height.
G.Skill’s NEO has tight CL16 timings with minimal power consumption increase. Because it uses Samsung’s B-die, it has tight CL16 timings with minimal power consumption increase.
In addition to its superb overclocking, it also is possible to boost the frequency up to 600MHz if you are willing to sacrifice timings. Retightening the timings further to CL14 produces a similar increase in performance as well.
DDR4 memory from the NEO was used in the video linked above, so it’s easy to compare them. Do you think that the $100 price difference is worth the 20-30fps difference in only two games, when results elsewhere are comparable or even indistinguishable? That’s something you will need to decide for yourself.

The blinged-out Dominator Platinum memory by Corsair is the resounding answer. Found inside the most prestigious of setups, its bright and vivid lighting immediately draws attention. Moreover, we chose a 5200MHz version that’s not too expensive, giving those who value style more than substance no excuse to not get some.
Like the Delta RGB, the Dominator Platinum RGB retains almost all of its distinct visual elements. With its 56mm height, this RAM kit is the tallest in the guide by far, with its square-shaped LED holes and overarching top reinforcement plate. Although the logo is different, the imposing heat spreader, square-shaped LED holes, and overarching top reinforcement plate remain the same.
Compared to other kits at the same frequency, this kit costs more because of the Capellix lights. The same thrifty and bright lights Corsair uses to great effect in its premium liquid cooling products. In addition, their unique diffuser layout further enhances the neon-like glow they produce.

As Shiny As It Gets
It used Samsung B-die in previous iterations of the Dominator Platinum RGB. This time, Corsair used Micron A-die to cut costs or to increase supply. The XMP profile is an excellent choice for 5200MHz kits, especially if you don’t care about memory optimization and just fire up the XMP profile.
Since the kit can’t be overclocked further, it doesn’t seem to have been designed this way. You could push it to 5400MHz but dropping the timings would cancel out any benefit.
Our review of this kit with slightly better timings is a good way to demonstrate DDR5’s current lack of true progression. While the test was conducted on an i9-12900K, its results speak for themselves. There aren’t many differences between Raptor Lake’s fastest DDR5 RAM and kits such as this one, despite Raptor Lake’s optimizations.

With these factors in mind, Kingston’s Fury beast RAM could just be the ideal memory kit for your Intel i9-13900K, especially if you’re looking to future-proof your rig.
Having a similar architecture to the Dominator Platinum, you can expect it to perform well and leave enough money on your wallet for a bigger cooler. Kingston doesn’t make HyperX RAM anymore, but its legacy remains in the Beast’s design. With just a few cuts on its top and punched-out squares for decoration, it’s the stealthiest kit in this review.
As a 34mm single-rank layout, the Fury Beast can fit inside even the tiniest builds. It uses Micron A-die we discussed in our Corsair RAM review.

Embracing DDR5 on a Budget
In order to differentiate the kit, Kingston introduced two XMP profiles: the first one reaches the same timings and CAS latencies as Corsair’s memory at 1.25V, while the second one reaches the same timings and CAS latencies. It is also recommended that you switch to 4800MHz at better timings and only 1.1V for testing purposes. There are many similarities between the two kits, both in testing and overclocking. You can assemble data with them or dish out justice in Gotham Knights, and they perform with accuracy and precision. Additionally, Micron A-dies cannot be overclocked.
While Kingston’s DDR5 kit doesn’t scrape the bottom of the RGB barrel while maintaining a low price, we can’t fault the company for trying – and succeeding – to provide a kit which doesn’t scrape the bottom.
