In the market for a new graphic card that can handle 4k gaming? Here are some of the best options currently available, from budget to high-end. With so many choices, it can be hard to know where to start. But we’ve got you covered. Read on for our round-up of the best graphic cards for 4k gaming.
best graphic cards for 4k gaming
Several gamers have many options when selecting the best graphics cards for 4K gaming. The current industry standard for several gamers is 3840×2160, or 2160p. Compared to FHD, it offers much higher crispness, and the latest consoles are capable of supporting the resolution. It requires high hardware requirements, however, making UHD, or 2160p, a popular gaming resolution.
It is going to be very difficult for gamers to choose between Nvidia and AMD graphics cards. Intel is also going to jump in with its Arc Alchemist series of GPUs. This means that graphics cards capable of 2160p will be plentiful.
There used to be few graphics cards capable of 2160p gaming with 2160p resolution before AMD released the RTX 30 Series and Nvidia launched the RX 6000 series. Now, it’s possible to find cards in 2160p with 2160p resolution for about $850.

What we thought of the RTX 3090
The RTX 3090 is only beaten by a slightly faster competitor, the RTX 3090 Ti. This is only true when it comes to 4K gaming. It’s hard not to recommend the 3090 rather than the 3090 Ti . Why? Because the 3090 starts at around $1,800, while the 3090 Ti is closer to $1,500 (sometimes even less). With 24GB of VRAM and raw power, the 3090 is a great choice not only for gaming at 4K, but also for creative applications.
Since it is made for those who work and play on the same PC, the 3090 belongs to the “prosumer” category. Therefore, it appeals to a rather niche crowd. However, finding a GPU that’s suitable for both gaming and work is hard. Due to its use of GeForce drivers, instead of workstation drivers (perhaps artificially optimized to run certain applications better), the RTX 3090 is more of a gaming GPU than a workstation GPU.
It is also worth noting that Nvidia reduces the speed of Tensor core operations on the 3090 because they do not wish to cannibalize workstations or datacenter GPUs. If you will only be using the GPU for computing, there are better alternatives.
Our testing showed that the 3090 averaged 61 frame per second under 4K with maximum or near maximum graphics settings. You could, of course, easily drop a few settings if you wanted more frames and achieve a comfortable frame rate of 90 or 120 frames per second.
DLSS
However, DLSS can be enabled in select games to boost frame rates without sacrificing visual detail, so you can do that if you don’t like lowering quality settings. In spite of the fact that DLSS is available in less than 200 games, most of those games are AAA games that will need extra performance. If you’re interested in 120 frames per second or more, you’ll need to lower a few settings even with DLSS enabled. There are no compromises when it comes to the 3090, but it is not quite fast enough to handle 4K without compromising.
Despite its high ray tracing performance, the 3090 struggles in 4K games. Without DLSS, you might not be able to hit 30 frames per second in some games, especially if you do not want to alter the graphics settings. The GPUs will probably need to improve their performance at 4K with ray tracing for at least one or two generations more.
Though the 3090 isn’t cheap or for everyone, its excellent performance for 4K gaming and excellent workstation performance make it the best 4K GPU.

What we thought of the RTX 3080 10GB:
It has less VRAM and performance than the RTX 3090 and a lower price tag, so it is essentially an RTX 3080 10GB with less VRAM and performance. Compared to the 3090, the 3080 10GB is significantly cheaper for a similar level of performance. Due to its lower VRAM, the 3080 isn’t ideal for work, but is primarily designed for 4K gaming.
The 3080 10GB barely exceeds 60 frames per second in heavy games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at max settings, which is a decent framerate, but not exceptional. The 3090 can also be equipped with DLSS for better performance in some games, and you can also reduce graphics settings for better performance. You can expect better framerates with the 3080 10GB in older, less demanding games; Battlefield V reached 103 frames per second, which is excellent.
Ray tracing
Unlike the 3090, the 3080 10GB performs ray tracing in a much worse way than that of the 3090, which means that it is even less capable at 4K in ray tracing. In order to enable ray tracing at a mediocre frame rate, you have to lower a lot of graphics settings and enable DLSS. However, it does not make much sense to go down to low or medium settings just to enable ray tracing. In the case of 4K gaming with ray tracing active, only the GPUs the 3090 and the 3090 Ti are the only GPUs that are capable of doing so.
There is an option of the 3080 with 12GB of VRAM, but it is simply way too expensive. So you may notice that I have always mentioned the amount of VRAM the 3080 has. Although the 12GB model offers a bit more memory bandwidth and a few more cores, most 3080 12GB cards start around $1,100, making it hard to justify the added performance.

The 4K resolution requires plenty of VRAM
It performs very well at 4K

RX 6900 XT review

A more reasonable alternative to the RTX 3090 should be made by the RX 6900 XT as it provides more performance at the same price as the RTX 3090, and it is fully designed for use by gamers. Who is it for: The RX 6900 XT is for gamers with a large budget without a need for features like DLSS or hardware acceleration.
What we thought of the RX 6900 XT:
AMD GPUs perform well at 4K, even though it is not the best resolution for them. With 16GB of VRAM and a great deal of performance at 4K, the 6900 XT gets a recommendation here because of its low price and plenty of VRAM. A lot of 6900 XTs can be found for less than the MSRP of $1,499. At the time of writing, many are selling for about $800 to $1,000.
According to our RX 6950 XT review, the 6900 XT averaged 78 frames per second across five games, compared to 75 frames per second for the RTX 3090. The 6900 XT, however, is significantly slower at ray tracing. Using ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077, the 6900 XT was able to reach 13 frames per second whereas the 3090 was able to reach 21 frames per second. Although neither GPU made the game comfortable, it was playing at maximum settings, and lowering some of those for smoother play is definitely possible.

DLSS
It’s not possible for AMD GPUs to utilize DLSS, but AMD does have its own upscaling technology called FSR, which isn’t perfect. The original version of FSR 1.0, which has poor visual quality, is in most games that have it. There are more and more games that support FSR 2.0, but it’s not as common as DLSS right now. However, it has a better visual effect at the moment. The fact that FSR is open source implies it can eventually be just as useful as DLSS. AMD’s progress on FSR is promising, and it could soon be just as useful as DLSS.
A great price-to-performance ratio and AMD’s commitment to improving FSR during the near future will make the 6900 XT an attractive option for anyone who will not be using ray tracing or using DLSS on an Nvidia GPU.
Lastly, I would like to remind you of the RX 6950 XT, the card I mentioned earlier. From its name, you can tell that it’s faster, but I didn’t recommend it because it’s just too expensive. Well, it has a lower performance than the 6900 XT. Typically, you can find 6950 XTs starting at around $1,100, and that just doesn’t seem like a good deal for a slight improvement in performance.

6800 XT review
With the 6800 XT GPU, you’ll get 144 frames per second at 4K, without needing a top-end GPU like the 3090 or 6900 XT. Who has this at their disposal? Video game players who prefer high frame rates over high quality graphics.

RX 6800 XT review: What we thought
AMD GPUs are the best graphic cards for 4k gaming. They are a great option if you want to play at 4K at 144 frames per second with good performance without ray tracing turned on. If you want to play 4K at 144 frames per second, ray tracing is out of the picture. Therefore, AMD GPUs are an excellent choice. Compared with other GPUs that are designed for 4K gaming, the 6800 XT is relatively cheap.
According to Techspot, the 6800 XT averaged 70 frames per second across 12 games at 4K and maximum quality settings. The the 3080 10GB averaged 72 frames per second. There’s no way you can get 144 frames per second. This means you’ll have to dial down your graphics settings in many games. However, you’d have to do that even if you had a 3090 Ti or a 6950 XT. So you’re not the only one doing that.
Like the 6900 XT, the 6800 XT doesn’t support DLSS. Therefore, you will have to use FSR where it’s available instead. Since FSR 2.0 seems to be taking off much faster than DLSS did, we feel that the 6800 XT can be found for at least $100 less than the 3080 10GB.Read more on Ddr3 vs ddr4 vs ddr5 graphics card.
