The Samsung 870 EVO is the best way to expand storage with a 2.5-inch SATA drive rather than a small M.2 “gumstick” if you want a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive. This SSD offers a range of capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB and is quite affordable for its performance, making it the fastest SATA SSD we’ve tested. Despite Samsung’s outstanding Magician SSD management software and long warranty terms, the EVO series has become a legend due to its high performance.
This drive trails the 870 EVO by just a hair in benchmarks and costs $12 less in 1TB form, at $98, making it an excellent alternative. SK drives are only available in 1TB capacities these days, but 870 EVOs range from $60 for 250GB to $450 for 4TB. A 1TB model from Samsung costs $110. Crucial BX500 – Best budget SATA SSD
In terms of performance and affordability, the Samsung 870 EVO is a great option, but if you’re looking for the most capacity for the lowest price, you’d be better off with the Crucial BX500. There are several variants available, including the 1TB model for $80, $30 less than the similar EVO, while the 480GB model costs $45. Additional versions include the 240GB and 2TB models.

PNY CS2140 – Best PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD
You can certainly benefit from PCIe 4.0 SSDs during large file transfers, but switching to an NVMe SSD can make your PC run significantly faster and more responsive if you’re still running an older system with PCIe 3.0. It doesn’t matter what your computer does, you don’t have to spend a fortune to do so. In addition to being an excellent everyday drive, the PNY CS2140 is now available for $93 for a 1TB unit. This is due to the fact that this drive uses your system memory for caching data. Even though the CS2140 is a PCIe 4.0 SSD, its performance is considerably subpar. However, considering its low price, its PCIe 3.0 performance is more than enough to win it this award.

Even though PNY’s drive has a five-year warranty, its poor TBW rating partially offsets this. The Crucial P5 and SK Hynix Gold P31, which cost approximately $15 to $20 more, are also excellent choices for anyone looking for a robust daily SSD at an affordable price.

Seagate FireCuda 530 – Best PCIe 4.0 SSD
Seagate FireCuda 530 is a lightning-fast PCIe 4.0 SSD. The drive just dethroned the venerable SK Hynix Platinum P41 with its compelling combination of high performance and blistering speed. All competing drives failed to outperform the FireCuda 530 in synthetic benchmarks and real-world transfers. The only downside is the price—it’s not cheap, but it’s the fastest thing on the market.
In terms of speed, this will be faster than most of the competition if you have a PCIe 3.0 system, but it is twice as expensive as similar PCIe 3.0 SSDs.

WD Black SN580X – Best PCIe 4.0 SSD
Despite being the best PCIe 4.0 SSD on the market, Seagate FireCuda 530 isn’t the only option. You can get excellent PCIe 4.0 speeds with the WD Black SN850X at a somewhat reduced price if you don’t mind something just a bit slower but still quite fast. In terms of overall performance, the SN850X excels, making it a more than reasonable choice. It is one of the best SSDs on the market, but Seagate’s slightly faster speeds and substantially higher TBW rating led us to recommend the FireCuda 530.

Be sure you understand the benefits of NVMe disks before investing in them. Standard SATA SSDs already improve boot speed and load speed for PCs, and are far cheaper. NVMe drives, whether in an M.2 form factor like the Samsung 980 Pro or a PCIe form factor like the Samsung 980 Pro, are most useful if you frequently transport data, especially large amounts. Until you do this, NVMe SSDs aren’t worth the price increase.
You’ll only find M.2-connection motherboards from the past few years if you opt to get an NVMe SSD. Because it’s a new technology, your PC must be able to handle it. The majority of NVMe SSDs are available on PCIe adapters and standard Intel CPUs from the 6th generation forward. They were common in the early days of the technology, before M.2 was popular, but they are becoming less common. Getting the most out of an NVMe drive requires a system that recognizes it and can boot from it if you want to run your operating system on it. PCs bought within the last year or two should be able to start from an NVMe SSD, but older motherboards may not support this. If you don’t see the NVMe boot option on your motherboard, you might need to upgrade your BIOS. You should still be able to use an SSD as a secondary drive even if you can’t boot from it.

Using four PCIe lanes in your computer, this interface is about 4GBps faster than SATA with supercharged NVMe disks. These kinds of insane speeds complement supercharged NVMe drives well. Your motherboard may have PCIe lanes as well as M.2 slots wired to support the PCIe interface, and adapters are available that allow you to slide a gumstick M.2 drive into a PCIe lane. A PCIe 4.0 motherboard as well as an AMD Ryzen 3000-series (or newer) CPU and a PCIe 4.0 SSD are needed to use PCIe 4.0 SSDs.

You can instantly make your old computer seem like a whole new system by simply replacing its hard disk with an SSD—and it will be blazingly fast at that. The best way to upgrade your computer is by purchasing an SSD.
However, SSDs are usually not available at ultra-high capacities due to their higher price per gigabyte compared to mechanical hard drives. You can use a limited-capacity SSD as your boot drive and a regular hard drive as secondary storage if you want both speed and space. You just need to put the boot drive with your applications, the hard drive with your media, and then you’re good to go.
