DTX form factor is an adaptation of ATX specifically for small form factor PCs (such as HTPCs) with dimensions of 8 inches by 9.6 inches (203 by 244 millimeters). On January 10, 2007, AMD announced its development of a new industry standard intended to make system components similar to Shuttle’s original “SFF” design interchangeable.  A result of this collaboration is an DTX form factor that was designed and developed to be open standard and backward compatible with ATX form factor cases. AMD also introduced a shorter variant of the DTX form factor called Mini-DTX, which has a smaller PCB size of 8 by 6.7 inches (203 by 170 mm).

There are two expansion slots on DTX motherboards, the same as on ATX and microATX boards, as well as an optional ExpressCard expansion slot.

Benefits

DTX reduces production costs in a number of ways.

In standard printed circuit board manufacturing panel sizes, DTX can manufacture up to four motherboards at a low cost

Per standard printed circuit board manufacturing panel size, Mini-DTX can produce up to six motherboards at a low price

As little as four layers of printed circuit board wiring are required to manufacture DTX motherboards, which reduces the cost of manufacturing motherboards

Vendors may be able to create DTX products with little development cost by leveraging backward-compatible ATX infrastructure
