- Should you buy?
For those with deep pockets and who prefer unique hardware, G.SKILL has become a niche option for PC components and accessories, even though it is not the largest. Among the best-looking RAM modules available is the Trident Z Royal, which has long been regarded as such.
Using Samsung RAM modules, aluminum heat spreaders with gold or silver finishes, and RGB lighting, the company relies on Samsung RAM modules. To ensure the right amount of light comes out, G.SKILL carefully crafted crystalline light bars instead of basic diffusers, as on the excellent Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro.
As far as looks are concerned, the Trident Z Royal RAM modules are one of the best DDR4 memory kits that we have ever seen. Now, lets examine how this kit fares in real-world usage and see if it is something you should consider for your PC setup.
Bottom line:
You can create an awesome PC build using G.SKILL’s Trident Z Royal RAM kit. In addition to looking great, these DIMMs are very fast too. In addition to the build quality, the reliability makes this one of the best kits on the market today.

G.SKILL TRIDENT Z ROYAL TECH SPECS
Our 16GB sample kit included two 8GB DDR4 DIMMs from G.SKILL. Using the extreme memory profiles (XMP) allows you to reach the 4000MHz clock speed when using AMD or Intel motherboards and CPUs, provided the processor and board can handle the higher speeds. Since this RAM is DDR4, it can work with both AMD and Intel motherboards and CPUs.

It comes in at almost $300, making it a bit more expensive than some of its competitors. In addition to its beautiful design, the Trident Z Royal has CL15 latency, a low latency rating for its supported clock speeds. On paper, this kit looks like one of the best kits on the market.

G.SKILL TRIDENT Z ROYAL DESIGN AND FEATURES
In order to achieve its goal of making the Trident Z Royal a premium RAM module, G.SKILL designed it to be displayed on a jeweler’s display shelf, not on Amazon or other online retailers’ website. Instead of being packaged in a standard cardboard or plastic package, the kit comes in a premium black box even before you open it.
After opening the kit, you will find two RAM DIMMs along with a microfiber cloth and sticker. When the modules are in transit, they are encased in high-density foam, which provides adequate protection. The aluminum spreaders are fingerprint prone, so it’s clear why the cloth is included.

G.SKILL’s Trident Z Royal RAM kits are better suited on display in a jeweler’s.
This kit is the 4000MHz (CL15) kit, however G.SKILL sells Trident Z Royal in many different configurations, including this one. When the speed is 2666MHz and the modules are slower, you can save a little if you choose to buy them at a slower speed. The 64GB 2666MHz kit will cost you less than the 16GB review sample. You can spend even more on DIMMs that run at up to 4800MHz.
It is available in gold or silver, with fancy CNC-cut aluminum heat spreaders that look amazing. The spreaders are huge and add a lot of weight to the DIMM. It may be difficult for the RAM modules to install in smaller chassis due to the fact that they aren’t quite as large as some other RAM modules, such as Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro. G.SKILL kept the dimensions standard.
It has a DIMM slot that powers its lighting directly, so no additional cables are required. Additionally, the DIMM modules can be synchronized up with motherboards from ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, and ASRock as well as G.SKILL’s own software suite.

G.SKILL TRIDENT Z ROYAL PERFORMANCE
Source: Rich Edmonds / Windows Central (Image credit: Source: Rich Edmonds / Windows Central)
The core clock speed and the latency rating can be used to determine a lot about RAM performance. DDR4 DRAM is typically rated at 2666MHz these days, but most modern processors are capable of working at 3000MHz and beyond. It’s not too much difference in cost between 2666MHz and 3200MHz, so the latter is a better option.
G.SKILL Trident Z Royal is super-fast with low latency for excellent performance.
There’s a good deal of difference between RAM kits when you get into the region of 4000MHz. It’s easy to get too fixated on clock speeds and overlook latency ratings when you get to this point in the RAM cycle. CAS stands for column access strobe (CAS) and it’s simply a measure of how fast a memory module can access data. As the CL figure decreases, the overall performance will be better.

Clock speed
In order to get the best performance and performance from your cooling system, you will want a clock speed of at least 4000MHz, provided your processor and motherboard support it, but with a CL latency rating of CL15, which offers a low latency rating of 15ms. This G.SKILL Trident Z Royal kit has a clock speed of 4000MHz, which is pretty fast and a CL latency rating of 15ms.
At 75.4ns, AIDA64 showed a relatively low latency, which corresponds to other RAM modules. Considering the boost in clock speed, it’s an impressive result, but not as strong as the Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro’s 55.3ns. The read, write, and copy rates, however, were much higher.
It doesn’t seem like there is much of an improvement when it comes to gaming. I was able to find a slight increase in FPS of about two when I fired up Grand Theft Auto V, Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, Stellaris, and Tomb Raider compared to 3200MHz. The difference in price between 3200MHz and 4000MHz kits isn’t much, and that’s not much either.
Overclocking
We have observed that overclocking a system or building an enthusiast rig will give you greater value than anything above 3200MHz, as our testing indicates. The extra headroom becomes particularly important when you’re overclocking or building an enthusiast rig. It’s true that there are faster kits at 5000MHz, but at that point, you can’t expect much more if you can find motherboard and CPU support without tinkering, and even then, the timings can be a little off.

The sweet spot for RAM is between 3200MHz and 4000MHz. You can push G.SKILL’s DIMMs beyond the rated speed as long as your system is capable of handling the additional bandwidth, since it uses Samsung’s B-Die. Overall, a top-notch performance to match the superb design.

Who it isn’t for
- Budget PCs
The overall design and finish of RAM kits are important when choosing them for a PC build; it’s possible to save a little money by picking a standard-looking RAM kit and installing it inside your PC. G.SKILL’s Trident Z Royal RAM is perfect for creating an excellent-looking PC if you want to take things to the next level and set your PC apart from everyone else.
When installed on a motherboard, the modules will look fantastic no matter which finish you choose, and the RGB lighting is only a bonus. The way G.SKILL designed the diffusers with the aluminum spreaders appeals to me even though I don’t usually find RGB lighting appealing on hardware like RAM and headsets.

Final thoughts on G.Skill Trident Z Royal Series
The performance of this card isn’t only about its looks, and G.SKILL ensured it was worth the price tag. Those 4000MHz modules are easily among the best memory modules on the market, especially if you have the latest Intel or AMD Ryzen processors. If you can stretch your budget, I would definitely recommend them as a gaming PC module.
