Overview of GDDR5
Based on DDR3 SDRAM memory, GDDR5 has two times as many data lines as DDR2 SDRAM, similar to its predecessor – GDDR4. In addition to the 8-bit wide prefetch buffers used in GDDR4 and DDR3, GDDR5 SGRAM conforms to JEDEC’s specification. SGRAM is a single-port memory device. Although SGRAM has a single port, it is able to open two memory pages at the same time, mimicking the dual-port characteristics of other VRAMs.
For high-performance operation, the module uses an 8N-prefetch architecture in conjunction with a DDR interface. It can operate in one of two modes, 32bit mode or 16bit mode, which is detected during the initialization process of the module.
Write clock cycle
Every write clock (WCK) cycle transfers two 32-bit wide data words to and from the I/O pins with the GDDR5. The 8N prefetch protocol corresponds to 256-bit data transfers at the internal memory core with two CK clock cycles and eight 32-bit wide one-half WCK clock cycles at the I/O ports.

In GDDR5, two types of clock are used. Forwarded differential write clocks (WCK) serve as references for data readings and writes, and differential command clocks serve as reference for address and command input. GDDR5 SGRAM uses three clocks in total: two write clocks corresponding to two bytes (WCK01 and WCK23) as well as a single command clock (CK). WCK operates at twice the frequency of CK.
For example, GDDR5 with a 5 Gbit/s data rate per pin operates at 1.25 GHz, while both WCK clocks run at 2.5 GHz. CKs and WCKs are phase aligned during initialization and training. The alignment allows minimal delay between reads and writes. There are approximately 67 signal pins on a single 32-bit GDDR5 chip, along with power and ground pins.

GDDR5X
There is a new generation of SGRAM, the GDDR5X, which will be standardized by JEDEC in January 2016. With GDDR5X, the transmission rate per pin is hoped to be twice as high as it is with GDDR5. The memory controller can choose either to use the double data rate mode with 8N prefetch or the quad data rate mode with 16N prefetch, thus making it easier for the memory controller to use the double or quad data rate mode. GDDR5X has 190 pins (190 BGAs). On the other hand, the standard GDDR5 uses 170 pins per chip (190 BGAs).

Commercialization of GDDR5
There were three types of GDDR5 memory available in 2008: 3.6 Gbit/s (900 MHz), 4.0 Gbit/s (1 GHz) and 4.5 Gbit/s (1.125 GHz). On May 10, 2008, Qimonda announced that it would mass produce 512 Mb GDDR5 components, each with a rated bandwidth of 3.6 Gbit/s (900 MHz), 4.0 Gbit/s (1 GHz) and 4.5 Gbit/s (1.125
A video card utilizing AMD’s Radeon HD 4870 was the first to use GDDR5 memory on June 25, 2008. In 2010, Hynix released a class of GDDR5 with a clock speed of 7 GHz and a processing speed of 28 GB/s in the 40 nm class.
GDDR5 components of four gigabytes each were released by Hynix in the third quarter of 2013. Micron Technology quickly followed up, releasing its implementation in 2014. The company added two and four gigabytes of GDDR5 memory to its graphics memory solution portfolio in February 2014 with the acquisition of Elpida.
GDDR5 memory chips with an 8 Gb capacity fabricated on 20 nm fabrication processes were launched by Samsung on January 15, 2015.
