Some gamers don’t want overclocking features. The Gigabyte XFX 4090 motherboard is perfect for gamers who want to save some bucks on components to buy a new Nvidia RTX 4090, but don’t want to keep spending exorbitant amounts on components.

As Asus and MSI dominated the market, Gigabyte started its Aorus series as a means of regaining market share. Now, Gigabyte keeps making hits with its Aorus Elite AX range.

Featuring a 16+1+2 digital VRM design and a 6-layer 2x copper PCB, this motherboard provides you with plenty of bandwidth and storage thanks to its exceptional specifications.

In terms of mid-range Z790 components, the Aorus Elite can’t compete directly with high-end motherboards, but it is certainly the best. The Aorus Elite AX offers nearly all of the qualities of high-end gaming in addition to an impeccable look, without breaking the bank. With this powering your Intel 13th Gen rig, you won’t be able to play any video game without feeling comfortable.

As with gamers, overclockers will strive to break through the power limits on their various components the whole time, much like how gamers enjoy sitting and playing their games without any breaks. It has an Aorus VRM design and built-in switches that enable rapid overclocking potentials. The Aorus Z690 Tachyon is the pinnacle of PC overclocking.

If you haven’t yet upgraded to a Z790 motherboard, this Tachyon board is a great choice. It will take advantage of 15th Gen Intel CPUs beautifully.

In addition to dual 8-pin CPU power connectors and 15 Vcore phases at 105A power stages, Gigabyte’s Tachyon VRM uses Tantalum polymer capacitors to provide improved transient response and stability. In comparison to its predecessor, Gigabyte claims that the new design can reduce voltage spikes by up to 30%.

It’s no secret that you spent a fortune on your Raptor Lake CPU, and you probably also bought an RTX 4090 GPU. If you want to use these sweet components to their full potential without burning your wallet, then the ASRock Z690 Extreme is the one you should pick. While you save up for the Z790 motherboard, you can make the most of your CPU and GPU with this motherboard.

While the Z690 Extreme did not perform well in multi-threaded workloads, it was a phenomenal performer in gaming environments and light single-threaded tasks in 2021. Despite being a low-priced board, it is well-equipped nonetheless. There are three M2 sockets on the ASRock Z690 Extreme WiFi, eight SATA ports, a 13 Phase MOSFET with 105A SPS (Vcore), and 64GB DIMM slots for DDR5 6400.

As we noted earlier, this motherboard falls short of the new Z790 motherboards if we compare it to them. However, when compared to its peers, this board performs better than many of its competitors. With a new 13th Gen processor, this component is a great match for it without spending too much money.

This is the current top five Intel 13th Gen motherboards, with Asus coming out on top. Even though Z690 is still a viable choice for Raptor Lake, future-proofing one’s rig is paramount as components begin to wear out. It’s only a matter of time before Meteor Lake takes hold, and DDR5 could start dominating the RAM market. There is no rule that says one must use the Asus ROG Maximus as their only choice. Pick the board that best suits your needs and workflow.

Features

These are some of the typical features you’ll need to remember when selecting a motherboard:

Chose the right socket:

We’ll continue to see the LGA 1700 socket at least until the new 14th Gen chips come out, and Intel has been loyal to it so far.

Motherboard size:

There are three sizes of boards:

Your choice will depend on how big your rig will be and how many ports you’ll need. The bigger the motherboard, the more ports it will have.

Ports and slots:

As new technology arrives, ATX motherboards will be in high demand. Once you know how many ports you need, select a motherboard size.

Aesthetics:

Seeing all the vibrant, beautiful components running like a living, breathing organism inside a PC can be very satisfying for some people.

How we picked the best Intel 13th Gen motherboards

We’ve been watching closely for Intel 13th Gen’s debut. During our first benchmark, we determined what characteristics a motherboard needs to have on a list of greats for Intel’s new CPU line. The form factor was our first benchmark. Since a new PC generation has big GPUs and plenty of overclocking headroom, we opted for the standard ATX form factor. As soon as we considered that, we moved on to checking connectivity and aesthetics.
