VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

VicTsing’s mechanical gaming keyboard isn’t much to look at, really. It sports a compact, ergonomic, no-nonsense design that really doesn’t say “gamer” save for its RGB lighting. While this may be disappointing for people who enjoy wilder designs, minimalists and users who plan on taking the keyboard to the office will adore it. The base keyboard comes in jet black but you can opt to purchase the white detachable metal frame for a whopping $2 extra which is just incredible value.

By contrast, the black and white colors on the metal frame give the keyboard an eye-catching appearance. This sets it apart from STOGA mechanical gaming keyboards.

Design & Layout

From an aesthetic standpoint, the board is a tad minimalist. Its black base, black keycaps, and clear lettering only appear when the LEDs light up. Once you do, it appears more like a gaming keyboard.

Since this is a mechanical keyboard made at a reasonable price, you shouldn’t expect anything special about its construction. Its chassis and keys are similar to any $15 plastic keyboard found in most public libraries.

There is still enough rigidity in the baseboard to prevent it from flexing and destroying the switches. The board is drop-resistant up to 2.5 feet, so you can drop it from a desk without worrying about damage. You probably won’t want to drop it much higher than what you can handle, however. The most important thing you’re paying for here are the mechanical switches.

Water resistance

As a positive point, the cable included on this board is permanently attached. This is quite typical for boards of this type. Although it is not particularly thick, it is braided in nylon to keep it from fray

VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

It is also notable that the VicTsing Backlit Mechanical Gaming Keyboard has a good deal of water resistance. The worst nightmare of any gamer is spilling something across the new keyboard. The designers of most PC components assume that if you spill something, no matter what happens, it’s your fault, so in some cases even pretty fancy boards don’t come with water protection.

With the VicTsing Keyboard, water and other liquids will be channeled to places that won’t damage the board or its LEDs thanks to four drainage holes placed along the board’s edge. Even though you should make every effort to avoid getting liquid on your board, it’s nice to know if it does happen you don’t have to panic.

Typing Experience

VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

In addition to its affordable Blue switches, the VictSing P259 is one of the most appealing parts of the package. We are in the process of confirming official specs from VictSing (they read Jixian) but in testing, we are finding they feel and look very similar to Cherry switches. There is a clicky sound associated with Cherry’s Blue switches because they have a 2.2 mm actuation distance and a 4.0 mm travel distance.

A popular choice among gamers is the MX Blacks (opens in new tab), which provide a more resistant operating force of 60g, along with the clicky, arcade cabinet-like audible feedback that is offered by the MX Blacks. However, they don’t have the reputation of Cherry and might not be as long-lasting and stable as Cherry. However, for the price, they do provide a decently close experience.

In return, these keys shout in response. They’re great for touch-typing and feeling powerful, but if you use them in a crowded area (my boyfriend left our office while I wrote this review), you might get a few annoying stares. As a result of its cheap-feeling keycaps and futuristic font, the VictSing P259 is less comfortable than other gaming keyboards. The pound sign looks like a crosshair to me, for some reason. There is also a tendency for them to wobble.

Due to its lack of a large 0 key commonly found on keyboards with numeric pads, the P259’s tenkey design also makes it awkward to type on.

Enkey mapping options

VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

In order to handle this issue, VictSing offers three different tenkey mapping options. There are three options: Numlock on, Numlock off, and gaming, which emulate tenkeyless operation. This is confusing. There are other hybrid tenkey/navigation keys with arrow keys on the bottom row, but they aren’t as common as those with large 0 keys.

The right arrow key adds to the confusion. When Numlock is turned off, it acts as Delete, which is how some tenkeyless keyboards with arrow keys work. Right arrow keys are not labeled for Delete, since they can also be used as periods when Numlock is activated and as right arrow keys when gaming mode is activated.

I found the P259 to be capable of typing letters well enough. I averaged 70-75 words per minute (wpm) on 10fastfingers.com, close to my Huntsman Tournament Edition’s average of 75 words per minute (wpm). Although the keycaps were wobblily, the P259 still gave me the true mechanical keyboard experience, loud clicks and all, which is impressive.

Gaming Experience

VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

In my opinion, the VictSing P259 is likely to be equally polarizing among gamers thanks to its clicky Blue switches. I’m used to Cherry MX Red switches and Razer Linear Optical switches, but these are louder and require a lot of force to actuate.

With a keypress requiring 60g of force and a 4.0mm travel distance, heavy-handed gamers will find plenty of response. For users like myself who prefer Red’s (2.0mm actuation point, 45g force required), the 2.2mm actuation point may seem a little slow. In the end, whether you’ll enjoy this keyboard for gaming depends on how much you like the stiff, clicky nature of Blue switches.

Moving quickly from side to side (AD spamming) to confuse enemies felt incredibly strenuous in Overwatch because of the heavy amount of force required to register key presses. This was less of an issue in slower games, such as Halo: Reach, where my focus was kept in check, rather than simply pressing the A and D keys mindlessly). Trying to focus on any other key other than the basic movement proved to be a challenge in both games. Because of the extra force required, I had a hard time keeping my eye on the action. P259’s keycaps

With a keyboard like this, I couldn’t resist trying a fighting game. When I played Dragon Ball FighterZ, I found that I was able to input special moves easily with the VictSing P259 and that I was able to keep up with my combos more easily with the slower keypress actuation than I was able to with a PS4. I wasn’t able to unleash my full Super Saiyan potential with this game because I still used a gamepad.

The VictSing P259’s keycaps didn’t act as an asset or a hindrance in any of my test games, but I definitely felt as if my power level was at least over 9,000. Due to the fact that I didn’t need to move my hands across the entire keyboard quickly, the wobble I experienced when typing didn’t negatively affect gameplay. As a result of their concave shape, the keycaps provided little friction while my fingers found a good grip on them.

Features and Software

While it does not support the storage of profiles in onboard memory, the VictSing P259 includes seven RGB modes that can be accessed without any software by holding down the Fn key and pressing the number keys. There are also FPS modes that illuminate just the arrow and WASD keys, MOBA modes that illuminate the standard hot keys in that genre, as well as full-keyboard effects, including static colors, waves, and strobes. In addition to setting up custom lighting, you can also use the P259’s software, which provides an easier way to set up custom lighting. It is also possible to adjust brightness using keyboard shortcuts, as well as program your own custom modes through hot keys. The app can be downloaded from VictSing’s support page as a rar file.

The software allows you to create multiple profiles with customized lighting, key mapping, and even macro recording (though lighting cannot be adjusted per-key). Additionally, you can program shortcuts and activate gaming mode, as well as bind mouse inputs to keys.

As a little company, it offers a surprising amount of customization, and its straightforward and straightforward UI makes it more accessible to those without much experience customizing keyboards.

What you’ll love about the keyboard

For a budget accessory, this keyboard feels awesome to use.

Certainly, VicTsing chose a slanted, ergonomic angle to provide a keyboard that feels great to use. It was a wise decision. Moreover, the keycaps are smooth, they fit the device’s switches well, and they don’t resist downward pressure, all three of which are crucial to have in a gaming keyboard. Although I’m not a big fan of VicTsing’s choice of switch, I’ll explain why later on.

In addition to providing an excellent user experience, this keyboard is also very durable. The keyboard’s all-metal panel and 50 million keystroke switches ensure that it can withstand intense gaming without failing. It even has two drain holes on the back of the accessory that you can use to keep spills from occurring if you tilt the keyboard.

RGB lighting

While this keyboard isn’t going to come with a ton of bonus features, it does come with RGB lighting, and you can customize how the lighting looks with VicTsing’s driver software. Furthermore, the drivers allow you to remap keys, which is great for fans of custom control schemes. With a toggle switch, you can choose when to use one set of keys or another. Lastly, the keyboard saves space by combining the number pad keys and navigation keys together. People who want something compact will appreciate this design.

What you’ll love less about the keyboard

There are two things I don’t like about this keyboard even though it is excellent overall. The first is that it uses Cherry MX Blue switches, rather than other switches. Despite the fact that Cherry MX Bleues offer substantial tactile feedback when typing, they aren’t the best for gaming due to their longer actuation times and larger actuation distances. Cherry MX Speed switches and Cherry MX Blues are notoriously clicky, which may irritate some users. Some gamers don’t mind having to press down harder and longer, but I personally do.

Additionally, the RGB lighting doesn’t illuminate the characters on the top of the keycaps, which means that when the sun goes down, you don’t see the characters, which is a minor complaint, but nevertheless a noteworthy one. Having the symbols on your keys illuminated is very useful when you are working in the dark.

Final thoughts on VicTsing Mechanical Gaming Keyboard

Although I would not normally choose a gaming keyboard with blue switches because I dislike the cacophonous racket that they produce, I would choose the VictSing PC259A if I had only $40 to spend on one. There is no way you could resist its customizable lighting and excellent build quality.

Its cluttered design and the absence of a palm-rest make me apprehensive about the keyboard, but I am not sure I’m asking too much for a $40 keyboard. If you’re on a budget but want a keyboard with a lot of bang for your buck, I’d highly recommend the VictSing PC259A.
